About Me

Donna Ross-Jones
I am Evyn and Nicky’s mom. I am challenged and rewarded daily; caring for Nicky who has autism, raising my daughter, being a mom & owning a business. Nicky’s diagnosis changed our lives and installed a profound desire in me to serve others. I co-founded a non profit Special Needs Network (a community org. dedicated to helping underserved families). I have participated in training videos & documentaries; “I Am Your Child” with Sylvester Stallone”, Dr. Brazelton’s “Coping with Grief”; Joey Travolta & Keri Bowers “Normal People Scare Me”. I serve on the Board at N.L.A Regional Ctr & I have been working on the CA Dept. of Developmental Services ASD project: developing Guidelines for Effective Interventions. I testified before the Blue Ribbon Senate Commission on Autism and was seated on a task force which developed legislative recommendations to improve supports for people with ASD. I recently accepted an appointment on a CA Senate Committee chaired by Senator Steinberg. My company Transition Music provides music for TV & Film. I’ve been honored with recognition by the City of Los Angeles, featured in the LA Times, Hollywood Reporter, Black Enterprise & Music Connection.

Why this blog?
My friend Lee urged me to create a blog to write about my days. The daily events he has heard me rant about as I raise my son who has autism and my daughter with a condition we all know much about "being a teenager" as a single parent.
He persuaded me that my “daily” stories could help others understand and learn from my journey. So here we are. My goal will be to share something useful with you, albeit about autism, teenage daughters, gratitude, survival, friendships, the education system, or even singlemomness.

Your comments left on the site are open for all to read, so please join the conversation. If you have a specific question for me, please send it to autismdaybyday@gmail.com.

  4. Hey I know there is a lot about girls with autism and how the symptoms can differ from males and also why girls get a harder time seeking a diagnosis. I made a video all about it, please let me know what you think. VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-bGIhCjGJU&list=PLsnq_HpT7puQDe0Q7yy_z0A2dcdXHoLf1

  12. Hello, I am doing a Psychology Major at Southern Utah University and I am in a group that is doing a presentation on Autism and are assigned to follow a blog to get input, insight and information of the aspects of Autism. I myself have a little brother that has Down syndrome and a bit of autism. I am very familiar with these conditions and enjoy working with children and older individuals that have these as well as understanding of what families go through with such cases. Will you mind that I and my group follow the blog and get to know your point of view from the experiences you have had and are having?
