News Alert: Insurance Update for California

Autism Society of Los Angeles Announces an important consumer alert from the California Dept. of Insurance about the new autism health insurance law. It lays out the specific rights of the insured individual to behavioral health treatments and speech and occupational therapies.

Please note that the law covers both children and adults. It also lists a website to file a complaint if coverage is denied.

If you or someone you know is being denied coverage by their insurance company, please contact the Autism Society of Los Angeles by e mail at execdirector@autism la.org. We are gathering this information to present to the California Department of Insurance.

Please also note that the Department of Insurance covers only insurance companies. HMO's are covered by a different agency called the Department of Managed Health Care. If you are having any concerns with your HMO, please contact us at the email listed above.

If you or someone you work with does not have health insurance or is covered by Medi-Cal, then the consumer should be receiving behavioral therapy through their regional centers.

PS:  I just got a letter from my insurance carrier stating they now cover Applied Behavioral Analysis and other evidence based behavioral health therapy. However they clearly stated that they will not cover:
  • Respite Care
  • Daycare
  • Educational services
  • Reimbursement to parent/guardian for providing care

I'll post later on where to look for these supports :)
