FAMILIES WITH SPECIAL KIDS WILL BE HIT
HARDEST, AND NOT JUST AT SCHOOL! IF PROP
30 DOES NOT PASS IT WILL TRIGGER 6 BILLION DOLLAR REDUCTION TO THE DEPARTMENT
OF DEVELOPMENTAL SERVICES BUDGET.
My family and thousands
more depend on regional center services - who’s funding has been systematically
cut for the past 10 years – further reductions could destroy the supports we
rely on resulting unthinkable consequences.
Vote yes
on Prop 30. Don’t just take my word for
it please read for yourself - WHY NORTH
LOS ANGELES COUNTY REGIONAL CENTER (NCRC) SUPPORTS PROPOSITION 30
Saves
$50 Million Mid-Year Cut to Regional Center System
North
Los Angeles County Regional Center (NLACRC) is a nonprofit agency that provides
services and support to more than 19,000 people with developmental disabilities
and their families. NLACRC supports Proposition 30, which will raise several
billions of dollars to help balance the state budget, and avoid massive cuts to
the developmental disability service system, education, and other critical programs.
If
Proposition 30 does not pass, the Governor’s budget plan will enact a “trigger
cut” of over $6 billion dollars including a $50 million mid-year cut
(equivalent to a $100 million loss over a full fiscal-year) to be imposed on
the California Department of Developmental Services. Next year a full $100
million reduction would also be imposed. Other programs such as adult education
and health care services face funding
cuts that would add to the negative impact on people with developmental
disabilities and their families.
Proposition
30 creates two temporary tax changes: an increase for the next seven years of
1% to 3% for the top income earners
making over $250,000, and an increase in the sales tax by 1/4TH of one percent for the next four years. These
taxes will help increase funding for K-12 schools and community colleges. Proposition 30 will also provide a
constitutionally protected source of state revenue for local public safety and
health and human services programs.
Join
many others in voting YES on Proposition 30 including:
Association
of Regional Center Agencies, California Nurses Association, Disability Rights
California, California State Council of Service Employees (SEIU), the American
Federation of Teachers, and other organizations that serve California’s most
vulnerable population.
Some voting age clients of regional centers are not allowed to vote. That makes it your responsibility to vote in a way the benefits them. Support Prop 30.
ReplyDeleteIt is my understanding that, if Prop 30 passes, there is no guarantee that the funding will be dedicated to the DDS, it will go into the general fund. So what the governor has done is guaranteed we will lose money if we don't support it, but there is no guarantee that we will get money if it passes. Seems to me voters are presented with a choice between the worst of 2 evils. I hope you're not offended if families and advocates question the tactic.
ReplyDeleteNope I'm not offended, I'm grateful for everyone who intelligently engages in the conversation. Thanks for your perspective.
