The contrast between doctor offices for grown ups and pediatric offices is a little microcosm of the world, offering an unwelcome peek into our world to come.
This is just one more reminder that Nick is growing up. He looks like a giant in the pediatricians office!
I know there's nothing I can do about it, but I don’t want to leave the cushioned kinder
gentler world of pediatric care, with its happy receptionists, patient nurses, toys,
stickers, cushy comfy sofas and inviting bright colors, for the "Adult World" of rushed doctors, hard
chairs, sedate colors and magazines on illness and aging. I don’t
want to leave the world that radiates hope and possibilities for the future, in
exchange for a world whose only blueprint for the future of adults with autism
is depressing and certainly not hopeful; just maintenance and acceptance for what is, and not dreams of what might be.
No one knows the pain of each transition better than those who've already experienced it. My heart hurts remembering each stage you describe in your wonderfully articulated journal. The one saving grace is that we all eventually get to a place where we stop lamenting what could have been and begin to celebrate what is. Bless you dear Donna as you share your unabashed jouney of survival. Nicky is lucky indeed to have you for his mother.

ReplyDeleteThe last time I researched the employment outlook for adults with developmental disabilities, the figures were not good. About 90% of all adults with developmental disabilities are unemployed. This is simply a waste of lives, as well as a burden to the entire socio-economic system. There is a man from Norway, Thorkil Sonne, who is creating jobs for those with high-functioning autism. He will be setting up his business model, Specialisterne, soon on the east coast of the U.S. His workers, all with ASD, test computer programs, cell phone and table apps, etc. As the parent of a son with autism, Sonne is one bright light in an otherwise dismal landscape. But surely among all of us other parents, we can put our heads together and figure something out. But imagine that--jobs being imported to the United States! And all because of our ASD population. Wild.
